Merle Somerville
About the Artist
Merle Somerville has been photographing landscapes for over 30 years. Since completing his Canadian Master's in Photography in 1978, his work has been published by several national magazines, Okanagan Tourism, and recently the Knowledge Network in celebrating British Columbia’s 150th Anniversary. Merle's first solo exhibition was in Vancouver in 1999, followed by several other exhibitions featuring his large-format panoramic images of American National Parks.
Lately Merle's work has focused on viticulture and seasonal changes in the Okanagan’s unique environment. He believes that the art of photography is in seeing the image. He also believes that the only way to produce extraordinary photographs is to look at objects with an artistic eye and be sensitive to their light, colour, composition, texture, and movement. No greater reward exists for him than to produce a photograph that expresses his thoughts and emotions—and to have those felt and understood by someone else.
